It would have been easy to make Shōgun a story about the English sailor who washes ashore. Instead, this adaptation wisely recenters on the Japanese characters navigating a knife’s-edge succession crisis — and it’s all the richer for it.

A masterclass in restraint

The show trusts silence, subtitles, and slow-burning tension. Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai anchor a cast that never overplays a moment. Political maneuvering has rarely felt this tactile or this dangerous.

By the finale, the accumulated weight of every glance and gambit pays off. This is television made with total command of its form.
